What’s FTP? What?s an FTP account? When do you need to have one?

FTP, which denotes File Transfer Protocol, is one of the most widely used means for sending files between a PC and a server. Using FTP software like FileZilla, you can establish a connection to your web hosting account and drag ‘n’ drop files or whole directories in either direction and the software will cope with all the rest. There’re a number of pros of employing FTP, including the option to resume an upload/download if there is a problem with the connection and the possibility to set up different FTP accounts. With the latter option, you can create FTP users that can connect only to certain folders in your web hosting account, but no other folders, emails or any other information, which makes it the best solution especially if you have to provide a web designer with access, for example. You can also use an FTP account with popular web design apps like FrontPage or Dreamweaver and upload the web content that you have created directly from them, without having to make use of any 3rd-party software.
